We receive many questions about Vilene and Interlining, like which interlining to choose, what is suitable for my project, etc. A question came in from Inneke from Naai-atelier.be. She wanted to make a coat for her granddaughter of an orange red linnen fabric a large dot pattern. She made the pattern for it herself and asked me for advice about the interlining, it had to provide a bit of warmth. The idea for the coats was that without any batting it would be a little chilly, but it didn’t need a lot of volume because it is not a wintercoat. The coat is meant for spring and autumn. So we emailed back and forth to decide which batting to use. I advised her to pick either the Soyamix or the Bamboomix, because we both prefer fabrics and interlining made from natural materials. It’s a personal preference, but me and Inneke have the same view on that so it was not a difficult choice…

Volume fleece vilene: soyamix or bamboomix, what to choose?

The two kinds of batting or volume fleece I advised look very similar, both are soft, thin and supple. Of course the composition is different, the Soyamix has soya and the Bamboomix has bamboo fibers mixed with cotton in both battings. The main difference is in the with / size. Soyamix is 150cm wide en available in our shop per meter, the Bamboomix is available in pieces of 135×220 or 270x220cm. The size 270×220 is meant to be used on a bed, in a quilt or bed cover for example. But bamboo is suitable for clothing too. Inneke preferred the Soyamix because of the size of her patterns. That is why she chose Soyamix.
Stitch for topstitching lining with batting
When sewing a piece of clothing with batting, the common thing to do is to stitch together with the lining around the edges. When asking advice on topstitching batting on fabric, most people only think of a check pattern. Stitch straight lines about 3 cm apart, turn 90 degrees and do the same again. This is not an obligation, you can pick you own pattern if you want as long as the pattern allows the batting to be attached evenly across the pieces. Why not stitch triangles or in this case circles would be more logical. Inneke has chosen a wavy stitch that also complements the large dot pattern on the coat.

The end result of the coat after giving the advice

Inneke from Naai-atelier.be has made this beautiful coat and her granddaughter couldn’t wait to put it on, that is a great compliment to get! Thank you Inneke for sharing these pictures, it’s nice to see the end result. Most customers don’t give any feedback, but every once in a while there is a customer like Inneke who does and we love to share it with you all. Seeing peoples work can really inspire others…
