Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

for hems, seams, facings and waistbands

Want to buy vilene tapes?

Vilene tape to sew in or iron on, which type would you like? Edgetape and seamtape by vilene are made for straight seams. Seamtape is 1cm wide, edgetape is available from our shop in 2, 3 and 4cm wide. The difference? Edgetape is like vilene interfacing H410, this one has reinforcing threads that prevent stretching. Because of these threads, the vilene itself does not have to be very thick and so edgetape is nice and supple.
Seamtape is a little firmer, that is probably why edgetape is sold more than seamtape…

New: Flexible edgetape ánd Stretchfix, flexible hemtape

Flexible edgetape is 15mm wide and stretchy. For perfect seams in soft elastic fabrics, for example jersey. Keeps the seam straight and will prevent frizzing of the fabric. Can be applied on rounded seams and straight seams.
In packs of 5m or on a large roll of 50m for the frequent user. Available in black and white.
His flexible brother Stretchfix is 3cm wide and looks like vilene bondaweb. Only stretchfix is suitable for stretch hems and bondaweb is for non-stretch. The infosheets of all these types are available in our shop as attachments with the individual products.

You would think vilene tapes can not be used wiht stretch fabrics but with these types you can simply iron it in instead of sewing it!

Vilene tapes: flexible edgetape and stretchfix hemtape

Edgetape, thé iron in vilene tape

This versatile tape, used for all seams and hems. It is a straight tape so you do not use it in armholes or necklines. The length threads keep it to size and because it is thin your fabric will not become stiff. Available in differents widths.

The newest edgetape: 3cm wide

Now also available as a set! If you do not know which to choose order the set of the three widths in black or white. In this Beauty VoF Edgetape set you will find 2cm, 3cm and 4cm wide vilene edgetape in white or black, 5 metre per width

Cotton edgetape to iron in

After an inquiry from a customer, the cotton edgetape is born. This is cut at 2cm wide and available in white. It is fusable cotton cloth but made as tape.
Advantage is that is is made from 100% cotton and that is handy if you prefer natural materials. This is the only iron on vilene tape not made of polyester.
It is used in all kinds of ways, along the folding line of a lapel collar, as edgetape, in waistbands etc.

Formtape by vilene for round seams like necklines and armholes

Vilene tape for rounded seams, iron it onto fabric

Is your seam round? We have a special tape for that, called formtape vilene. This tape is 12mm wide and has a chain stitch. The chain stitch does the same as the length threads of edgetape, it keeps it to size. Formtape has only one, otherwise we could not get it to go round for your neckline or armhole.

Hemming with Vilenetape – iron in your hem

Create great hems with vilene bondaweb hemtape or take blindhemtape, also by Vilene.
The newest hemtape by vilene is the flexible hemtape, and it is called: Stretchfix! Looks a lot like bondaweb but flexible and 3cm wide. Extremely suitable for jersey and other stretchfabrics.
Bondaweb (2cm breed) is suitable for all fabrics, then why blindhemtape? Because blindhemtape is better for thin fabrics. To name an example: would you like to hem a supple cool wool you would retain more suppleness with blindhemtape than with bondaweb.

What is blindhemtape

Blindhemtape is 3cm wide and consists of 2 strips vilene H180 that are sewn together with a blind hem stitching machine, super for supple!
Bondaweb is also available in wider fleece of 45 or 90cm and these are used to fuse two pieces of fabric together. Think of embroidering or a fabric collage.

Solufleece vilene tape to sew in

A water soluble tape, what do you do with that?
Look at solufleece tape as a temporary aid. On delicate fabrics you sometimes do not want to iron interlining but you do want te create a rolled hem with the overlocker. It is in that moment solufleece tape is used. Put it above and below the fabric. After use you simply wash it out.
Use solufleece tape with the twin needle also. Hem your T-shirt in the same way: solufleece above and below. Using solufleece prevents the “hill” forming between the needles when sewing and that the fabric stretches as you sew it.
Solufleece is 2,5cm wide, a great size for a hem…

Solufleece tape is vilene tape that you can sew in. It does not have a coating but if your olufleectape has wrinkled you can iron it on a low temperature but do not use moisture!

Waistband

Vilene has a special perforated tape specially made for straight waistbands. The waistbands made with this tape have a width of 2 to 4cm. When your waistband is 2cm when it is done, the vilene tape will be 6cm wide with the perforated lines on 1, 3 and 5cm. This tape has an integrated seam allowance.

Waistshaper is a great vilene tape for ironing on and sewing in. If your fabric can not be ironed, simply sew it in.

Is the waistshaper to stiff?

Use cotton edgetape together with the 4cm edgetape. With this combination you will get a sturdy yet supple waistband. It goes as follows: Put two strips of cotton edgetape next to each other and put a 4cm edgetape over the top. Iron on your fabric. You will have a middle line because of the two strips of cotton edgetape but no seam allowance. Remember to cut an extra cm on the side for seam allowance. If you like your seam allowance with edgetape you can always ad a strip. In our experience that is not necessary.

Other tapes like shoelace tape or fitting tape

Besides all the tapes by vilene there are other tapes. These are sewn in. For example shoe lace tape: A thin tape of 5mm that can be used in the shoulders of T-shirts and more…

Another sew in tape is fitting tape. Also referred to as finishing tape. You can use this with a horsehair cloth interlining front. Fitting tape is made from cotton and it is beige, resembling the colour of undyed linen.
